If you have
wondered about these questions and are still searching for the answers,
we can help you. You will discover the answer is not what
you need to know, but who you need to know that makes
all the difference in life and eternity. If you have read the thoughts
in the 7 Wonders and desire a closer walk with Christ and
a deeper faith, there is a next step.
The University
Church of Christ is a body of Christians praising God through living
and telling the good news of Jesus. God adds people to His church
(Acts 2:47); therefore, only God knows for sure who has made a genuine,
acceptable commitment to Christ. We are compelled to teach only
those components of the response of faith to Jesus found in the
New Testament. We urge all to respond in faith to Jesus as did the
Christians of the New Testament church.
First, men and
women become believers in Christ as they hear the story of God's
loving, gracious act in Jesus Christ: You
see at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ
died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous
man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But
God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still
sinners, Christ died for us. -- Romans 5:6-8
The first response
of faith is to believe in Christ.
Second, men
and women allow the love of God in Christ to break their hearts
and change their lives. Only the hardest heart is able to look at
Jesus on the cross and not desire greater personal goodness and
God's promised forgiveness. Turning from wrong, or repentance, is
another natural response of faith in the life of a believer.
Third, men and
women are born again in Jesus Christ. The apostle Peter taught those
who believe in Jesus as the Christ: Repent
and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for
the forgiveness of sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit. -- Acts 2:38
The faith that
prompts a seeker to repent also leads that person to baptism as
a continuation of a faithful response to Jesus: You
are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you
who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
-- Galatians 3:26-27
Baptism as practiced
in the early church was by immersion into water (Acts 8:39). When
a believer is buried in water, he or she is joined with the blood
of Christ in his death and burial. The new Christian is raised from
the water, joining with the resurrection of Jesus and entering a
new life in Christ (Romans 6:4). Baptism is a response of faith
that changes lives.
